1 Peter 1:3-9
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our
Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to
a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance incorruptible
and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 who are kept by the power
of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In this you greatly
rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by
various trials, 7 that the genuineness of
your faith, being much more precious than
gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor,
and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ, 8 whom having not seen you love. Though now you
do not see Him, yet believing, you
rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, 9 receiving the end of your
faith—the salvation of your souls.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
One the most notable marks of the world and its prince is the chasing after the wind, hoping in materials that never satisfy, and in rebellion vainly worshiping creation instead of its Creator. The sadness is that though eternity is offered, the world chooses perishing decay as it puts its hope in things which are fading away. Yet, redeemed kingdom people have been born again out of God’s great mercy to a living hope that never perishes, fades, or becomes defiled as it is guarded by God himself, like one defending a fortress. This faith is not without its trials but like gold refined by fire, our tested faith results in genuine praise and glory and honor to Jesus Christ. Remember that true praise is not primarily for materials or blessings but for Christ our Lord; praise is not really for his gifts but for the Giver of those gifts.
Never think your faith is less because you have not yet seen Jesus with your physical eyes. R.C. Sproul notes, “In the Bible, hope is not uncertainty or wishful thinking, but a confident expectation of future blessing based on facts and promises.” The great fact and promise here is that at the revelation of Jesus at his second coming our salvation will be completely realized. For this brothers and sisters we can praise fervently now and rejoice one day soon with such inexpressible joy!
